PRESS STATEMENT BY NIGERIA LABOUR CONGRESS EDO VERDICT: A VICTORY FORETOLD!

On Saturday July 14, 2012, a significant high point was made in the annals of the country's history. Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, despite all odds, trounced his opponents by a landslide victory to be returned as Governor of Edo State. While he clinched 75% of valid votes cast with 477,478, the People's Democratic Party candidate, who was his closest rival in the elections , garnered only 144,235 votes. Comrade Oshiomhole did not only win the overall votes cast, but overwhelmingly won in all the Local Government Areas in Edo State.
For all those who have followed the twist and turns, the macabre designs, as well as mine fields put on the path of Comrade Oshiomhole at the height of campaigns for the elections, and the resoluteness of the Comrade Governor, workers and other patriotic Nigerians, as well as the determination of the good people of Edo State to ensure he continued in office as Governor, this victory is not only a triumph of light over evil forces, but a victory foretold.
It is a signal to the money bags and their godfathers and all those who believe in buying their way into office to loot the Public Treasury and consign the working people and Nigerian poor to eternal poverty and deprivation that the day of reckoning has come. It is a victory of performance, dynamism in governance and an honest determination to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people against graft, greed and impunity of the powers that be. It is a triumph of working peoples power, and a true reflection of the will of the Edo people over years of orchestrated deceit, and megalomania of a decadent ruling class.
We congratulate Comrade Oshiomohole , and organised workers, youths, women, professionals, informal sector workers, the unemployed and the aged persons in Edo State, who defied the ordeals and trauma of the elections to give victory to truth and justice in our country. it is a victory well deserved for the people of Edo State, and a triumph of democracy in our country.
We commend the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), despite the hitches, for rising up to the challenge regardless of all pressures to listen to the voice of reason and conducting a free and fair elections where the votes of the people count.
We equally acknowledge the role of security forces who resisted traditional state interference in their call to duty, and stood by to protect lives and property of the peace loving people of Edo State while they freely exercised their franchise at the polls.
We urge Comrade Oshiomhole to see this victory as a challenge to take up the gauntlet once more and consolidate on the remarkable gains made the last four years in Edo State and further expand on the dividends of democracy to the Edo people.

As Edo People Go to the Polls Today.
As electorates in Edo State, South South of Nigeria, go to
the polls to elect the State Governor today some very salient but important
issues need to be noted especially when the election seem to have attracted so
much national and international attention.
Edo State prior to November 2008 is one state in Nigeria
where you drive around and end up lamenting absence of infrastructures in all
ramifications, particularly roods, water, schools, health facilities,
industries etc. Even when this is one state that has produced very many of the
best brains in industry, government, academics, law, arts and culture as well
as politics.
Before 2008, the last time the people felt the presence of
government was when Prof. Ambrose Ali was governor and before him, Brigadier
Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia as military governor.
Between May 1999 and November 2008, the People’s Democratic Party,
PDP, was represented by Lucky Igbinedion, for eight years, and briefly Prof.
Osariemen Osunbor who by virtue of the judgment of the Governorship Election
Appeal Tribunal in November 2008 can’t be referred to as former governor of the
state.
However, throughout this period, there was no evidence of any
positive touch in any area of the needs of the people of the state. Their
administrations watched as flood massively took over the beauty of the state,
prided as the Heart Beat of the Nation. Schools built in the seventies were
either sinking or dilapidated or collapsed. Public health institutions gave way
to unregulated private health centres despite deepening poverty across the
state. Indeed, no public institutions worked, obviously because state resources
remained captives of a few powerful political juggernauts who felt comfortable
in their tinted glassed SUVs fueled with the people’s funds.
Today, the battle for the governorship of Edo State seem so
fierce because a very tiny few state dependents have been blocked from
accessing state funds meant for all of the state. Those who have no visible
means of livelihood but clearly dependent on feeding fat on what belong to all
of the state have become so desperate, like wounded “lions”, to the extent of
not just arming people they rendered jobless and hungry, but send the lowly to
murder for pittance. They send their kids abroad and give little to those they
rendered hopeless to kill for them to return to looting the collective treasury
for a very tiny few.
No one who ever lived in Edo State, or who had ever been to
Edo State will not believe the state was probably jinxed on development.
And since 2008 November, the Adams Oshiomhole administration
reopened the eye of every Edo person to the fact that government must be
responsive to the needs of the governed.
Roads, drainages, schools, health, job creation etc suddenly
became possible to revitalize with public funds under four years, when in
twelve years, others before his administration preferred to feed a few with
public funds. And nothing can be more disgusting than when those who wish to
return the state to abyss become so desperate as to ignore their eyes and
conscience, if any.
From benin City to Ugbekpe Ekperi to Ososo to Ewuato, to
Ugboha, to Okpoji, to Iruekpen, to Agenbode, to Warrake, to Okpella, to Igbanke,
to Ekiadolor, Sakponba, and all the nooks and crannies of the state,
the people can point to at least a school or health centre or road that have
become structurally better than four years ago. The opponent can continue to
show films of their own failures but the people will recall what yesterday was
and what has made today a resounding beauty and success.
The Edo people need to reopen their memories, look back to
their past, checkup the present and VOTE FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF THEIR
COLLECTIVE INTERESTS rather than accept crumbs from a tiny clique of thieves to
truncate their collective aspirations.
LOOK AROUND YOU, YOU WILL HAVE A REASON YOU MUST VOTE FOR
CONTINUITY TODAY AND LIVE A HAPPY LIFE. Vote Adams Aliyu
Oshiomhole of the Action Congress of Nigeria to complete his works rather than engage those who
are well known to have plundered state resources to satisfy their thirst for
power to steal more.
Nearly all communities in Edo State have at least five new
things they hitherto thought were impossible but now see within eyeshot.
As you go out this morning to vote, look around you, you will
see structures you never saw 3 and a half years ago. You will see new roads of
quality. You will see health centres; you will see the new look of your old
school etc and with those new structures, you will regret any reversal, if you
refuse to listen to your conscience and opt for crumbs being insultingly thrown
at your face. Edo must complete the rejuvenation and resuscitation of their
collective heritage.
The outcome of today’s election will determine the future of
this country.

NLC Press Statement: Stop the Diversions: Implement the Oil Subsidy Report, Now!

The ongoing accusations and counter accusations between the Chairman of the Adhoc Committee of the House of Representatives on petroleum subsidy, Honourable Farouk Lawal and the Chairman of Zenon Petroleum, Mr. Femi Otedola over allegations of bribery involving the sum of $600,000, as serious as it is, should not be used to divert attention on the implementation of the report of the committee.
For us, we believe that Nigerians should not be overburdened with an issue that should strictly be the burden of appropriate security agencies, particularly the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
Whether or not the Chairman or the entire members of the Adhoc committee solicited for and received gratifications to compromise the outcome of the committee’s investigations though quite disturbing, the final report of the committee still contains names and details enough for thorough and transparent investigation. The report, which has been submitted to the executive arm, must be subjected to proper investigation and prosecution of all those indicted.
We saw in the report a confirmation of our position. We have, since the mid eighties, insisted that subsidy do not exist in the petroleum sector, rather it has always been a conduit for a few cronies of successive governments with interest in the petroleum sector to siphon public funds for their private businesses.
For us, we believe criminal matters as serious as bribery should be what the police or EFCC should take very serious interest in and not politicize the issue through unnecessary diversionary tactics. We therefore urge the EFCC to implement the report of the committee, which President Jonathan was reported to have forwarded to the agency NOW.

NLC PRESS STATEMENT ON EDO ELECTIONS: NEED FOR VIGILANCE

As Edo state prepares for
its gubernatorial elections on July 14, 2012, we have watched with keen
interest some very disturbing political developments in the state , and feel concerned as these developments portends dangerous
signals to our young democracy.
While
decent leaders continue to echo the need for our politicians and their
political structures to adjust to fair play in political activities, including
elections, some prominent politicians have continued to perpetrate actions that
are clearly adverse to democratic norms.
One
of the contestants, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, who is the sitting governor of
the state, has publicly complained at various times about sinister plans by
some politicians to manipulate the elections, while a staff of the Edo State
office of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, was apprehended
by vigilant youths in Benin City. The fears expressed by the Edo state governor
are yet to be fully investigated to douse apprehension in the state.
Some
weeks back, some politicians from the state led by the leader of a major
opposition party in the state were reported by the media to have had a meeting
with the Presidency to perfect plans for the manipulation of the election. We
are still worried that the Presidency has not found it expedient to deny
holding such meeting for this purpose till date.
On
our part, we wish to reassure the entire Nigerian people of the strong
commitment of the labour movement to free and fair elections everywhere in
Nigeria, including Edo state, and will
join other patriotic Nigerians to continue to promote and defend these ideals
for sustenance of democracy in our country.
While
we reaffirm our confidence in the leadership of the Independent National
Electoral Commission INEC, we strongly advice its Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega
to be extra vigilant and careful in the handling of the July 14th
election in Edo State. He must not allow anyone, including INEC staff or
commissioners to compromise his credibility. Every registered voter must be
allowed to freely vote without intimidation. And all the votes must count.
INEC
must not submit to the pressure coming from certain political quarters that
federal civil servants should be used as adhoc staff for the election instead
of members of the National Youth Service Corps. While the federal civil
servants certainly have a role to play in electoral administration, the corps
members have proved their capacity for neutrality and willingness to work for
free and fair elections as was underscored in the last general elections in the
country.
We
call on all domestic and international election monitoring groups to gear up
preparations for observing the elections in Edo state to ensure records of
transparency and accountability of the electoral process at the elections.
We
also urge the Inspector General of Police IGP to come out strong in reassuring
the nation that all security agencies that will be drafted for the election in
Edo state will be fully prepared, and to remember that they were recruited to
protect lives and properties without bias.
We
call on all political parties and their candidates to demonstrate their
commitment and resolve to deepening
democracy by accepting to play by the rules and avoid the consequences of being
held responsible for the ultimate damage any negative actions will have on our
democracy and national image as a country.
